District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) serves more than 51,000 students and operates 117 schools across the District of Columbia.

In addition to DCPS schools, the District has 62 additional Local Education Agencies (LEAs) that as non-profit organizations operate 123 public charter schools. DC public charter schools are overseen by the DC Public Charter School Board, whose membership is appointed by the Mayor. Public charters educate roughly 43,000 students (46% of all DC public school students).
